As an ICT teacher I have had a wonderful opportunity to be part of setting up technology across the whole school. Early in the year I was selected by the school to join a team of Microsoft Innovative Educators. This was an incredible experience and has allowed me the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Microsoft products and how to deliver them successfully in the classroom. The main drive for technology at West Yas Academy is to be integrated into the classroom through an inquiry framework. Students have access to a laptops and iPads in every classroom and Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) is a major part of the curriculum. I have been able to support and set up an Innovation Room which includes circuit building, construction modules, Lego, robotics and art work through the use of recyclable materials. It is exciting to be part of a school that embraces 21st Century skills and places a high priority on integrating these skills into the curriculum. Across the school, there is a wonderful sense of collaboration, creative and passion between teachers, students and the community. Our school embraces all cultures and all nationalities from around the world by celebrating international days through sports, music, culture, food and dance. The school has provided students and teachers with balanced learning environment where academics, sports, arts and culture is of a high priority.

The students at West Yas Academy amaze me each and every day with their positive personalities and eagerness to learn. The students thrive in the technology assisted classroom and it is a pleasure guiding these children through their journey of inquiry. They show their understanding of technology both in and outside the classroom and through inquiry, innovation and creativity, being able to use technology to discover additional information or raising questions to discover more regarding a specific topic.

With technology being such an essential part of our daily lives, I encourage students and parents to discover the wide range of applications available to further develop their own learning, whether that be reading the daily news, watching a TED talk or simply taking photos. Technology is a tool we have all become reliant on and our children need to learn those skills too.

Living and teaching in Abu Dhabi has allowed my family and I to experience a multi-cultural environment.  We have thoroughly enjoyed our time here and found the local culture and people to be most welcoming and friendly.

Joining Aldar Academies and West Yas Academy has been the best career decision that I have made since being in the UAE.
