I was recently asked to sum up my first year here in three words and I think they have to be, challenging, busy and rewarding. I won’t lie, I was incredibly nervous taking the plunge and moving to the Middle East after spending the last three years in London but I was welcomed with nothing but kindness and hospitality. In my first few days someone said to me, ‘Over here, being so far away from home, your friends and colleagues are your family!’, this is a phrase that has stuck with me and I couldn’t agree more with it. There is a fantastic support network in Al Muna, no question is too big or too small. Everyone is genuinely there to help each other out when you need it, especially with this being my first year, there’s been lots of moments I’ve needed it!! Abu Dhabi is an amazing place to live, filled with beautiful beaches and never ending activities to take part in. It’s an incredible travel hub, I have been to countries this year that I never imagined I would have had the opportunity to see. I’ve visited India, Thailand, Bahrain, and South Africa to name a few. I have made friends from all walks of life and shared so many new experiences with them over the past few months. While Al Muna is a very busy school, it is a fun loving environment where the children are the focal point of all. It’s an international school and we are lucky enough to have an amazing bunch of children from all corners of the globe. I have learnt just as much from the children as they have learnt from me. It’s fantastic to see diversity being celebrated by all, young and old. We call ourselves a family in Al Muna, staff work tirelessly to ensure school is a memorable experience for our children, learning is fun, creative and hands on. Children love coming to school, they are eager to learn, they laugh, they cry but one thing I know is, they will never forget their years here. There have been challenges along the way, it has taken time adjusting to a new culture, there have been times early on where I wondered if I had made the right decision but I can honestly say hands down, I have. I’m looking forward to the approaching summer break, I’ll take time out, do some travelling, go back to Ireland and see my family but will return in August knowing what awaits me. I’ll return ready for the challenges and memories that next year will bring!
