Year 12

Term 1
Water, biochemistry, osmosis, fluid mosaic model, transport and gas exchange, cardiac cycle, blood vessels, amino acids, heart disease, vitamins, enzymes, DNA, and practical skills.
Term 2
Genetics, structure and function, ethics, plant structure and function, drug testing, prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, Mitosis, Meiosis, biodiversity, natural selection, conservation, Fertilisation, stem cells, specialisation.
Term 3
Complete and Recap Term 1 and Term 2 content. Unit 3 practical skills. 
In Year 11 students should have achieved a minimum of B grade at IGCSE level in Biology.  Due to the required numeracy skills in the course, it is also recommended that students have a minimum of grade B in Mathematics at GCSE/IGCSE level.  Some areas of essential knowledge from IGCSE Biology are listed below.
  • Classification, cells and processes
  • Digestion and enzymes
  • Respiration, breathing, transport and disease
  • Excretion, Coordination and response
  • Ecology 
  • Inheritance
  • Plant biology
  • Food production and microbes.
Assessment for AS Level final examinations
All students must sit three examination papers. Paper 1 (1hr 30 minutes), Paper 2 (1hr 30 minutes) and Paper 3 (1hr 15 minutes).
Assessment in class
Students are continually being assessed on their knowledge in lessons.  However, formal assessments throughout the year are below;
October - topic content, all previous topics.
December - topic content, all previous topics.
January - topic content, all previous topics.
March - topic content, all previous topics.
Students in Post 16 Biology will be set around 2 hours homework per week and will be expected to take on at least five hours of reading around the subject.
