Curricula

Year 10

Term 1
Students cover atomic structure, elements, compound and mixtures, covalent and Ionic bonding, chemical reactions and equations, extraction of metals with REDOX, and reactions of acids.

Term 2
Students cover reactions of acids, making salts, gases of the air, group 1 and group 7 elements, and covalent, ionic and metallic bonding.

Term 3
Introduction to moles and molar volume. introduction to industrial chemistry, practical skills and investigations. Assessment for IGCSE final examinations at the end of Y11 and all students must sit two examination papers Paper 1C – 2 hours and Paper 2C – 1 hour.

Assessment in class
Students are continually being assessed on their knowledge in lessons.  However, formal assessments throughout the year are below;

  • October half term 1 assessment – all previous content in Y10
  • November term 1 assessment - all previous content in Y10
  • January term 2 assessment - all previous content in Y10
  • February term 2 progress assessment - all previous content in Y10
  • March term 2 Assessment - all previous content in Y10
  • May term 3 Assessment - all previous content in Y10
  • May Year 10 mock exams.

Homework
Students in Year 10 will be set homework at least once a week for Chemistry.

Year 11

Term 1
Student cover, the mole, equilibrium, industrial chemistry, organic chemistry, and energetics.

Term 2
Students cover electrolysis, REDOX, analytical chemistry, titrations, and separating techniques.

Term 3
Is dedicated to revision. In Year 10 students will have covered the following:

  • Atomic structure
  • Elements, compound and mixtures
  • Covalent and Ionic bonding
  • Chemical reactions and equations
  • Extraction of metals with REDOX
  • Reactions of acids
  • Making salts
  • Gases of the air
  • Group 1 and group 7 elements
