Year 10

Autumn Term
In term 1, the students will focus on completing their IGCSE English Language coursework which is worth 40% of the final grade. The focus of the coursework is:

Assignment A: Poetry and Prose Texts. Students will complete a piece of writing which responds to any two poetry or prose texts from the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE English Anthology. Students must read and understand a variety of texts, selecting and interpreting information, ideas and perspectives. The students must also understand and analyse how writers use linguistic and structural devices to achieve their effects.

Assignment B: Imaginative Writing. Students must complete a piece of personal and imaginative writing based on a selected topic. The students must communicate effectively and imaginatively, adapting form, tone and register of their writing to achieve a specific purpose and appeal to a selected audience. Students must ensure they write clearly, using a range of vocabulary and sentence structures, with appropriate paragraphing and accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Spring Term
Exam Preparation.
Section A: Non-Fiction texts - students will study and analyse selections from a range of nonfiction texts.
Section B: Transactional Writing - students will explore and develop transactional writing skills.

Summer Term
Students will use this term to consolidate their understanding and focus on key area of development. Students will revisit sections A and B of the exam paper in preparation for the mock exam in May 2018.

Year 11

Autumn Term 
Students will complete a coursework essay (worth 40% of the final English Literature grade)  based on at least six poems – (three poems in depth from Section C of the Edexcel Anthology for IGCSE English Language and English Literature) plus three other poems. Students will study the novel ‘Of Mice and Men’ and the play ‘An Inspector Calls’  in preparation for the English Literature IGCSE exam.

Spring Term
Students will continue to study ‘Of Mice and Men; and ‘An ‘Inspector Call’’ in preparation for the IGCSE English Literature exam. Students will focus on structuring an effective, analytical essay and writing under timed conditions. Students will revisit Sections A, B and C of the English Language Exam Paper and revise key examination skills.

Summer Term
Students will cover any remaining subject content/targeted areas of development in preparation for the final English Literature and English Language examinations which will take place May/June 2018.
