During option block lessons the AS students are taught in a single theory group where the EDEXCEL AS PE specification is delivered. The year 12 cohort have 3 teachers delivering the separate units of the course. The units are highlighted below:

  • Topic 2: Exercise physiology and applied movement analysis

  • Component 4 performance analysis and performance development programme. 

Autumn Term
Teacher 1: Component 1- Scientific principles of physical education
Topic 1: Applied anatomy and physiology
1.1 Muscular and Skeletal system
1.2 Cardiorespiratory system and cardiovascular systems
1.3 Neuromuscular system
Teacher 2: Component 2- Psychological and Social principles of physical education
Topic 3: Skill Acquisition

3.2 The classification and transfer of skills

Teacher 3: Component 3- Practical performance & Component 4 performance analysis and performance development programme
Ongoing internally assessed piece of coursework delivered in both a practical and theoretical setting.
Component 3: Practical performance - Students are required to perform in one sport or physical activity in the role of either performer or coach.
Component 4: Performance analysis and development plan- Students are required to investigate two components of their chosen sport or  physical activity. This must be a physiological component and either a technical or tactical component. This is presented as a written report that is internally assessed and externally moderated.

2.1 Diet and Nutrition and their effect on physical activity and performance
2.2 Preparation and training methods in relation to maintaining and improving physical activity and performance

Teacher 2: Component 2- Psychological and Social principles of physical education

4.1 Factors that can influence an individual in physical activities
4.2 Dynamics of a group/team and how they can influence the performance of an individual and /or team
4.3 Goal Setting

Teacher 3: Component 3- Practical performance & Component 4 performance analysis and performance development programme
